On February 11th 2022, Pete Carroll hired former Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Sean Desai as Associate Head Coach for Defense.
Ryan Neil spoke very highly of Sean Desai saying, “I love him. He’s like a professor sitting in the lab all day. The things he says in meetings. It’s like I’ve never thought about that before.”
Defensive players rave about Desai. They say he’s “intense”. Some even call him “doctor” because he has a Ph.D. in Education – something fascinating that you don’t hear about NFL coaches too often.
What Makes Desai a Good Fit for the Seahawks?
Last season, the Seahawks defense ranked 28th in the NFL in yardage allowed at 379.1 yards per game. Following the season, Pete Carroll dismissed former defensive coordinator Ken Norton.
Desai’s Bears defense allowed just 316.7 yards per game last year, which ranked sixth in the NFL, despite lengthy injury absences for key players such as linebackers Khalil Mack and Danny Trevathan, as well as defensive lineman Akiem Hicks, among others.
Simply from the interviews, Desai has participated in, you can tell that he is going to be an excellent asset to the Seattle Seahawks. He’s an excellent communicator and is a very organized individual (something you’d expect from a coach with a Doctoral degree.
Coaching is educating. Desai is passionate about coaching and he’s passionate about making his players better. When you have someone like this in the locker room, film study, and more, there’s a lot of reassurance.
Here is his career history as a coach:
- Temple (2006–2010)
Defensive & special teams coach - Miami (FL) (2011)
Assistant director of football operations - Boston College (2012)
Running backs coach & special teams coordinator - Chicago Bears (2013–2018)
Defensive quality control coach - Chicago Bears (2019–2020)
Safeties coach - Chicago Bears (2021)
Defensive coordinator - Seattle Seahawks (2022–present)
Associate head coach / defensive assistant
Clearly, Sean Desai has plenty of defensive experience in the NFL. There is a strong conviction that Desai will get his players to do exactly what the team needs them to do to win.
Final Thoughts
Moving forward from last year’s 7-10 record, pieces on the Seattle Seahawks are going to be drastically different in the upcoming season. No more Russell Wilson or Bobby Wagner. Ken Norton is out, Sean Desai is in.
Although most believe the Seattle Seahawks are going to have a rocky season, I am confident in the personnel changes and can’t wait to see how the new additions, especially Desai will impact the organization.
