Dalton Schultz made a name for himself in the 2021-22 NFL campaign. The Dallas Cowboys tight end played on an expiring contract and the team placed the franchise tag on him back in March. Since then, both parties have been in talks about a contract extension. However, Schultz and Dallas are far from a long-term deal.
Schultz posted career-high statistics in just about every category last year. He racked up 78 receptions for 808 yards and 8 touchdowns. The former fourth-round pick in 2018 became one of Dak Prescott’s favorite targets.
After a career year, Schultz entered the free agent market. The Cowboys placed the franchise tag on their tight end, where Dallas will pay him just shy of $11 million for the upcoming season.
Schultz’s tag provides Dallas with an easy choice to negotiate a multi-year deal with their tight end. Both sides have until 4:00 p.m. on July 15 to agree on an extension. As of right now, Schultz and the Cowboys have not made a lot of progress.
15. Dalton Schultz’s 78 receptions ranked third among tight ends. Mark Andrews (107) and Travis Kelce (92) were the only other players at the position with more. If you prefer to wait to address the tight end position, Schultz is a nice value at his ADP.

The tight-end position does not attract the typical annual salary you see with a quarterback, defensive end, or a corner. For example, George Kittle is the highest-paid TE, making $15 million a year. The Cleveland Browns recently agreed to terms with their tight end, David Njoku, on a four-year deal that will add up to nearly $55 million.
Njoku totaled 36 receptions for 475 yards and 4 touchdowns. With Dallas’ tight end nearly doubling all of Njoku’s stats, it would not be surprising that Schultz will be hunting for a contract that is worth more than the Cleveland Brown TE. However, Schultz is not a top-tier run-blocking tight end. Njoku on the other hand is one of the best run-blocking tight ends in the NFL. Schultz’s strength is in the passing game, and being a third-down threat in the Cowboys’ system.
If both parties do not agree to terms by the July 15 deadline, Schultz will play the 2022-23 campaign under the franchise tag, where he will reenter free agency. Dallas could give their tight end another tag if they cannot come to terms on a new deal. It could be possible that Schultz will request a trade after this year if both sides cannot agree on a deal.
This is an important year for Schultz if there is no extension by July 15. If he can repeat his stellar performance last year, Schultz will earn a nice paycheck. The only uncertain factor is what uniform he will be wearing.

Great article!!!
The Dallas Cowboys need to understand how to build. If they keep wasting time on choosing, there will be no more options. They are an indecisive team. They need a leader who can take risk and could build a winning team.
