Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes popped on the injury report in Week 9 for an injury to his left ankle. He was a full participant in all three practices before the Chiefs listed him on their injury report Saturday as having no designation for their game on Monday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Patrick Mahomes landed on his ankle awkwardly
Mahomes looked mobile enough through most of the game at Arrowhead Stadium. However, the two-time NFL MVP appeared to land on his left ankle awkwardly when flipping a touchdown pass to running back Samaje Perine. Mahomes was helped off the field and checked out in the blue medical tent but returned for Kansas City’s next drive.
Mahomes would lead the Chiefs to two more touchdown drives to defeat the Buccaneers 30-24 and improve to 8-0 on the season. Mahomes went 34-of-44 passing for 291 yards and three touchdowns on the night.
Andy Reid made a joke after the game
Following the game, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid made a joke about Mahomes’ issue on Monday night.
Via Arrowhead Pride’s Pete Sweeney:
“Regarding Patrick Mahomes’ injury, Andy Reid jokes that Mahomes has the “loosest ankles in America.”

A scary moment for the Kansas City Chiefs
Mahomes didn’t think the reaggravation was a funny matter when he was helped off the field. Per Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star, Mahomes said he was “scared” at first.
“Patrick Mahomes said he injured the same ankle he rolled last week but it isn’t as severe as the injury he had in the playoffs two years ago: “It scared me a little bit.” Mahomes on Andy Reid saying he was taking him out: “I thought he was joking … We’re not doing this again.”

Mahomes said after the game in his postgame interview on ESPN that he didn’t think the injury would stop him from playing against the Denver Broncos on Sunday.
But the ankle will be a fear for Mahomes and the Chiefs until he’s fully healed.
