The New York Giants‘ decision to release Daniel Jones sent shockwaves across the NFL.
Not only must Jones’ former Giants teammates come to grips with the organization’s sudden about-face and turning the reins of the offense over to Tommy DeVito, but some of Jones’ former longstanding teammates were also stunned by the news.
“It sucks to see,” former Giants All-Pro and current Philadelphia Eagles star running back Saquon Barkley told reporters.
The Giants chose Jones with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, one year removed from making Barkley the No. 2 overall selection. Unfortunately, Jones departs with a meager 24-44-1 record as a starter, and the pair combined for just one postseason appearance with one playoff victory on the ledger.
“Our friendship has stayed close throughout the whole process of me being here,” Barkley said. “I have nothing but great things to say about [Jones], I don’t think you can find anybody who can say a lot of negative things about him.
“That’s the NFL. Hopefully, wherever he ends up next, they’ll be getting someone who will go in and work hard, do it the right way, like they did with me over here. Hopefully he has the same kind of fresh start, and success.”
