An uncharacteristically no good, very bad stretch for the San Francisco 49ers continued Monday.
Less than a day after a stunning upset loss to the NFC West rival Arizona Cardinals, the 49ers’ injury woes continued.
Already with Christian McCaffrey sidelined due to Achilles tendonitis, San Francisco lost a key defensive player due to injury for the foreseeable future.
49ers defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos underwent knee surgery that will sideline him for at least the next four-to-eight weeks.
“I think he got his surgery on Friday,” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Monday. “They told me their estimate is 4-8 weeks. It was the same injury that he had in the last preseason game. We thought giving it a long rest would be able to help it. It did for a little bit. The more he started playing, the more it started aggravating a little bit.”
Gross-Matos has only appeared in two games for the 49ers this season, posting one tackle against the New England Patriots.
Still, the 49ers’ string of misfortune over the past several weeks, including losing three of the last four games, continues with losing a depth player at a key position.
