The San Francisco 49ers will head into the 2024 season primed to return to the Super Bowl but, this time, aiming to emerge victorious. Last year, San Francisco made their second Super Bowl in five seasons but again fell victim to the Kansas City Chiefs and superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The 49ers are less than two weeks away from taking the field against the New York Jets in their season opener, with the team making roster cuts on Tuesday. Following the fallout of the team’s cutting down to a 53-man roster, the NFC West squad added to their receiver room on Wednesday.
The San Francisco 49ers will sign former LSU Tigers standout and Carolina Panthers receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. Carolina opted to release the 24-year-old on Tuesday, keeping only five receivers, including rookie first-round pick Xavier Legette.
San Francisco 49ers Pick Up Wide Receiver Help
Following the NFL’s mandate for teams to shrink their squads to a 53-man roster on Wednesday, the San Francisco 49ers added a roster cut casualty. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz:
Sources: Former #Panthers WR Terrace Marshall Jr. is signing with the #49ers. Marshall was a 2nd-round pick out of LSU in 2021 and is only 24 years old.
Marshall became a camp casualty of the Carolina Panthers earlier this week. Before his release, the former LSU star posted five receptions for 53 yards and a touchdown across three preseason games. Marshall appeared in 36 games in three seasons with the Panthers, starting 16. He accumulated 64 receptions, 767 yards, and one touchdown during that stretch. He won a national title during his college playing days while posting 23 receiving touchdowns in his final two seasons with LSU.
Marshall will join a San Francisco 49ers receiver room loaded with elite talent. The stellar tandem of Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk remains atop the depth chart, although the latter remains in contract talks with the club. Meanwhile, San Francisco added Ricky Pearsall (first-round) and Jacob Cowing (fourth-round) in the 2024 NFL Draft. Chris Conley, Jauan Jennings, and Ronnie Bell are also on the 53-man roster.
