The San Francisco 49ers took a blow to their pass rushing depth when Drake Jackson was placed on the reserve/PUP list earlier this week. As a result, they held workouts with several players in the hopes of finding a replacement. And they did.
According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the 49ers signed former Green Bay Packers pass rusher Jonathan Garvin to a one-year contract. Garvin played for the Packers from 2020-2022 and spent 2023 with the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL.
Another Birmingham Stallions standout is headed to the NFL: The #49ers are signing DE Jonathan Garvin to a one-year deal, per his agency @LAASportsEnt. Garvin played 2020-22 with the #Packers.

Coincidentally, Garvin won the roster spot over one of his former teammates, safety Rudy Ford.
New San Francisco 49ers Pass Rusher Jonathan Garvin Did Not Play Much for the Green Bay Packers
Garvin was originally selected by the Packers in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft. While he made the team out of training camp, he did not see the field much. Garvin appeared in eight games that season, playing just 18% of the defensive snaps and 10% of the special teams snaps. He recorded just five tackles.
2021 would be Garvin’s best in the NFL. Playing 39% of the defensive snaps in 16 games, Garvin had 1.5 sacks and 19 total tackles.
His playing time, though, decreased in 2022. Playing 23% of the defensive plays in 14 games, he had just eight tackles.
The Packers waived Garvin in late July of 2023.
New San Francisco 49ers Pass Rusher Jonathan Garvin Played in the UFL Last Season
With no NFL teams bidding for his services last season, Garvin signed with the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL. He had his best season as a professional football player with the Stallions, accruing 19 tackles and 3.5 sacks.
The 49ers will certainly be hoping that Garvin is a player on the rise. Jackon had 3.0 sacks in each of his first two seasons in San Francisco, as well as eight passes defended as a rookie in 2022.
Garvin played his college ball at Miami (Florida) where he was a standout pass rusher. In 2018, he had 60 total tackles and 5.5 sacks. The next season, his last in college, Garvin had 37 total tackles and 5.0 sacks.
