The San Francisco 49ers have a good chance to make the Super Bowl this 2024. Sure enough, they might want to make the most of their opportunity since a rough offseason awaits them, at least according to an expert prediction.
According to an NFC Executive who anonymously talked to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the 49ers’ weakened front office after the departures of Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, Ran Carthon, Ethan Waugh and Adam Peters over the years could be problematic. For a team that has often done well in free agency, trades and the draft, losing that much management experience isn’t easy to overcome.
Most recently, Peters became the latest front office exec to leave the team, as the assistant general manager joined the Washington Commanders to be their new GM.
Here’s what Fowler wrote about the 49ers:
No NFL team has more star power than the 49ers, who have built a perennial winner under head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch.
But as multiple league execs have pointed out, the organization has experienced some brainpower attrition. Personnel execs have left for general manager jobs in back-to-back-to-back years — Kwesi Adofo-Mensah (Vikings, 2021), Ran Carthon (Titans, 2022) and Adam Peters (Commanders, 2023). Executive Ethan Waugh also left in 2022 to become the Jaguars’ assistant general manager.
“That’s a lot for Lynch to overcome,” an NFC executive said. “They could get exposed in free agency and the draft.”
The San Francisco 49ers still have the core duo of Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey locked up for a couple more years, so the roster should be in good hands. Nonetheless, consistently complementing the two with weapons and other important pieces could prove to be difficult.
It remains to be seen how the front office exodus will really impact the 49ers long-term, but it will definitely be interesting to see how they perform in 2024.
San Francisco 49ers’ Focus Is on Super Bowl … For Now
While it’s certainly important to think about the future, the San Francisco 49ers won’t be too caught up with it for now. After all, they have a difficult task at hand as they face the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship.
The 49ers are overwhelming favorites to beat the Lions, with a recent analysis even giving them about a 74.1 percent chance to win.
Of course that is largely because of the talented roster they have, with two MVP candidates in Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey leading the way. Not to mention that they are well experienced on this stage, having made it to the conference championship in three straight years.
If the 49ers are able to win the Super Bowl, attracting talents should be easier for the team as well.
