Becoming a great running back in the NFL doesn’t happen overnight. It actually takes a lot of hard work on and off the field to make the thought a reality. For San Francisco 49ers’ Christian McCaffrey, there’s a secret to achieving that goal in the league.
McCaffrey was born in Castle Rock, Colorado, and attended Valor Christian High School, where he broke numerous Colorado high school records. He then played college football at Stanford University from 2014 to 2016.
As a sophomore in 2015, he had a standout season, surpassing the NCAA record for most all-purpose yards in a season with 3,864. He was named the Associated Press College Football Player of the Year and was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.
In the 2017 Draft, he was selected eighth overall by the Carolina Panthers. McCaffrey quickly became a star in the NFL, establishing himself as one of the league’s most versatile and productive players. The running back has held numerous NFL and Panthers franchise records. In 2019, he became one of only three players ever to record 1,000 rushing and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season.
In 2022, McCaffrey made headlines when he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers, where he continued to excel. In 2023, he was named the NFL Offensive Player of the Year after leading the league in scrimmage yards and touchdowns, and helping the 49ers reach Super Bowl LVIII.
San Francisco 49ers’ Christian McCaffrey Shares Secret To Becoming a Successful Running Back
It isn’t easy to stand out in the NFL, especially with all the talented guys playing in the league. For the 49ers star, though, there’s a secret to succeed as a running back, as written in an article by DJ Siddiqi for Responsible Gambling.
“If you want to be a good running back, learn how to play point guard,” says McCaffrey. “If you want to be faster, run track. The fastest kids in the school all ran track and I wanted to be fast – so I ran track. I think learning how to cut, hand-eye coordination, being able to jump, spatial awareness in basketball – all of those things – help with football.”
McCaffrey comes from a football family, as he is the son of former NFL wide receiver Ed McCaffrey and the brother of several other football players. He has established himself as one of the premier running backs in the NFL and is widely regarded as one of the most dynamic and well-rounded offensive players in the league.
Even with all of his achievements in the league, the 49ers running back still has a lot of gas left in his tank. Fans will certainly see the secret he’s talking about when the new NFL season starts soon.
