San Francisco 49ers: Land 2,329-Yard Rusher for Much-Needed Depth

Injuries continue to decimate the San Francisco 49ers’ running back position as Christian McCaffrey, Jeff Wilson, and Ke’Shawn Vaughn are the only healthy players. While Isaac Guerendo (shoulder) has returned to practice, Jordan James (broken finger) has missed the past few weeks, and it’s unclear when he will return. Meanwhile, Ameer Abdullah (ribs) and Corey Kiner (high-ankle sprain) were both waived/injured, and Patrick Taylor (fractured shoulder) is out for the season.

Because of this, the front office desperately needed to address its RB depth.

According to Adam Schefter, the San Francisco 49ers and the Washington Commanders have agreed on a single-player and draft pick trade. The 49ers acquire Brian Robinson Jr., and the Commanders receive a 2026 sixth-round pick in return. As a result, the team inherits the final year of Robinson’s rookie contract, and he will hit free agency next offseason.

Brian Robinson Jr., the Washington Commanders’ 98th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, has served as the starting running back in each of his first three seasons, leading the team in rushing in 2022 and 2023. He has totaled 2,329 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns in 41 regular-season games, including 799 yards and eight scores across 14 games in 2024. With the emergence of Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Robinson entering the final year of his deal, the Commanders made him available via trade last week, hoping to receive draft compensation.
