Christian McCaffrey dealing with a calf/Achilles injury for the past couple of weeks. He was admittedly questionable on Friday going into Monday night’s game against the New York Jets. Even with the “questionable” tag it was reported that he would be a full go Monday night.
Until Monday rolled around and McCaffrey was reported inactive and Jordan Mason would have the starting spot. Mason, who had a career night in his first start for the 49ers ran for 147 rushing yards and a touchdown on 28 carries. He tacked on one reception for five yards leading to a 32-19 win over the Jets.
49ers Injury Report Controversy

This is where things turn. The NFL wasn’t aware that McCaffrey wouldn’t be playing until Monday night, an hour before the game. Mason admitted to ESPN’s Lisa Salters that he was getting the start as early as Friday.
“When did I find out? Maybe Friday. Friday night, something like that,”
Mason responded when Salters asked when he found out he was starting. While there’s nothing new to holding your cards close to your vest. The 49ers have most certainly exceeded that, breaking NFL injury report rules in the process.

49ers Might have Admitted to Breaking an Injury Report Rule
NFL injury reports are crucial for transparency and fairness to the players and the league. It ensures that teams, fans, fantasy football managers, and sports bettors have accurate, up-to-date information about player availability, so they can make an informed decision.
Some might think it’s just a game and doesn’t matter, and to some extent, that’s true. The problem is thousands of businesses are affected by the NFL and their decisions. For example, sportsbooks rely on accurate injury reports to set betting lines, fantasy football platforms need timely updates to keep players informed, and media outlets depend on consistent information for accurate coverage.
Additionally, local businesses near stadiums, like bars and restaurants, experience fluctuations in foot traffic depending on game schedules and player availability. Merchandise companies see shifts in demand based on team and player performances. Coaches don’t care about your fantasy football team. They care about winning. If they begin to think hiding a player’s injury until the last minute will give them an edge, they’ll do it. However, that kind of thinking will have repercussions.
If Mason’s story is true and he found out Friday that McCaffrey was inactive and he was getting the start, then the 49ers would have broken an NFL rule by listing him as “questionable” even though they knew he was not going to play.
The NFL fined the Pittsburgh Steelers $75,000 and their coach Mike Tomlin $25,000 for violating the league’s injury report policy in 2019 when they failed to accurately list QB Ben Roethlisberger on the practice report before the team’s game. This was Roethlisberger’s right elbow injury, which led to season-ending surgery.
What could happen? If the league investigates the situation and finds the 49ers have broken the injury report rule for McCaffrey, there will likely be a fine. If the offense is severe enough, suspending players and forfeiting draft picks could be applied.
