Since General Manager John Lynch took his position in 2017, the San Francisco 49ers have won the uber-competitive NFC West thrice, secured double-digit victories four times, and appeared in two Super Bowls. San Francisco enters the 2024 season riding a three-season playoff appearance streak and remains hell-bent on winning their sixth Super Bowl in franchise history. The 49ers continue to be a beacon of talent, but that doesn’t mean every signing or draft pick is a bonafide slam dunk. On Tuesday, the team released another former top draft pick. As of Wednesday, per his Instagram, he will not return to the NFC West squad through the practice squad.
The San Francisco 49ers parted ways with 2022 third-round draft pick Danny Gray on Tuesday. With Gray’s release, only four of the team’s nine draft picks from 2022 remain on the active roster, much to the displeasure of the San Francisco faithful.
San Francisco 49ers Will Not Sign WR Danny Gray to PS
According to his Instagram page, former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Danny Gray is done with the team. According to the team aggregate account, The SF Niners on Twitter:
It appears #49ers’ former 3rd round WR Danny Gray is not returning to the team He has removed 49ers-related posts and posted a photo with the song title “Philadelphia”
The San Francisco 49ers burned their 2022 third-round selection on Gray after back-to-back stellar years with the SMU Mustangs. However, he did little to move the needle while in the pro ranks, finishing his tenure with San Francisco recording just one catch for ten yards. The 49ers’ other third-round pick that season, running back Tyrion Davis-Price, also played sparingly before his release last season. Their first pick from the 2022 NFL Draft, edge rusher Drake Jackson, will miss the entirety of the 2024 season.
Gray’s tenure with the San Francisco 49ers ended this week, following just one catch for 13 yards this preseason. Gray becomes just the next of a long list of 49ers draft picks to not live up to the hype, lowlighted by 2021 third-overall pick and quarterback Trey Lance. Fans flooded social media in disgust over the team failing to develop another high-valued draft pick.
Another waisted pick by Lynch.

Was pulling for Danny Gray, but it is best for him and the #49ers to part ways. I belive he will be a NFL WR and thrive in a different offense. #Eagles, #Cheifs, #Bills , #Miami
