San Francisco 49ers Disrespectfully Low-Balled 3x All-Pro Wide Receiver in Free Agency

The San Francisco 49ers are not exactly having what one might call a stellar offseason. While there is still plenty of time with the 2025 NFL Draft just a couple days away, it is hard to feel like San Francisco has drastically improved their roster.

On a positive note, All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey is healthy after missing all but four games of 2024 with various injuries. Having him back in the mix offensively will undoubtedly help.

That being said, the 49ers have made some unpopular and tough decisions regarding who they will have on their roster carried over from last season. Dre Greenlaw, Leonard Floyd, and Javon Hargrave were all allowed to leave via free agency. Maliek Collins and Taybor Pepper were released. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel was traded to the Washington Commanders.

The decisions to part ways with these players, of course, was financial in nature, with San Francisco unwilling (or unable) to pay them all.

The 49ers’ stinginess has apparently affected the way that they approached the free agent market, even when it came to targeting one of the biggest names: wide receiver Davante Adams.

Following his release by the New York Jets, Adams was toying with the idea of signing with a number of NFL teams, but was intrigued by the 49ers because of his close they are to his home. However, he never personally spoke with them because of what the team told his agent.

According to Mike Silver of The Athletic, San Francisco did not want to pay Adams what he is worth. “I was entertaining the Niners,” Adams said, “but they were like, ‘We’re paying wholesale. We ain’t paying retail.’ I didn’t talk to them, but that’s what my agent told me — like five times, that quote. And I was like, ‘OK, well, I’m not a wholesale-type dude.’”

The six-time Pro Bowler ended up signing a two-year $44 million deal with the Los Angeles Rams, one of San Francisco’s biggest rivals. Since they are in the same division, the 49ers will have to face him twice a year.

Hopefully, for them, he does not use their slight as motivation to play even harder against them.
