The San Francisco 49ers continue to strip the roster of key talent, ahead of potentially signing Brock Purdy to one of the richest contracts among NFL quarterbacks.
Tuesday, the 49ers released defensive end Leonard Floyd, in a move that creates $7.95 million in cap space, if Floyd’s release is designated a June 1 release.
Last season, the 32-year-old defensive end logged 8.5 sacks, while still looking like a high-end contributor at the position.

Floyd’s release follows the 49ers trading wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders, releasing All-Pro fullback Kyle Juszczyk, and persistent speculation that San Francisco could also move on from wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, at some point this offseason.
While Purdy is eligible for a long-term contract extension, one that will likely pay him among the highest-paying contracts among quarterbacks across the league, at some point is going to be a questionable decision to commit to the former seventh-round pick while trimming the roster of so much game-altering talent.
Through his first nine seasons, Floyd has logged 66.5 sacks and two interceptions to go with his 412 total tackles.
