The San Francisco 49ers have been looking to get back to the Super Bowl and win their first championship since Super Bowl XXIX. However, the beginning of the offseason is not looking great as there are a few players who are not appearing at the team’s OTAs.
Running back Christian McCaffrey is one of the players who have not been at the team’s voluntary offseason program, according to coach Kyle Shanahan on Tuesday.
“No, just like everyone else, it is voluntary. I’m not too concerned about Christian. But no, he hasn’t been here. … But it is all voluntary, so we’ll see when it becomes mandatory.”
Christian McCaffrey is coming off a season where he was first-team All-Pro, third in the NFL MVP voting and won the Offensive Player of the Year in his first full season with the San Francisco 49ers. He finished with 272 rushing attempts for 1,459 yards (5.4 yards per carry) with 14 rushing touchdowns and had 67 catches on 83 targets for 564 yards (8.4 yards per reception) with seven touchdown grabs.
It is unclear if McCaffrey’s absence from the voluntary OTAs are due to contract extension demands as he is not a free agent until 2026. He is going to make $14.144 million in 2024 and $14.344 million in 2025. The San Francisco 49ers are in an interesting position as they have a few contracts coming up over the next couple of seasons that they need to address, including quarterback Brock Purdy.
