The San Francisco 49ers have had an interesting off-season, to say the least. Their 2023-24 season ended in heart break once again, losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. While they have been the favorite in the NFC to return to the Super Bowl in 2024, their off-season has faced a number of tumultuous situations.
Namely, Trent Williams’ hold out, and Brandon Aiyuk’s hold in. The national media, however, is getting sick of the news surrounding the 49ers.

49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has been trying to convince the 49ers give him a new contract ever since the team lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl five months ago.
An obviously staged TikTok video claiming the 49ers “don’t want me back” has sent fans into a spiral, and he has formally requested a trade two weeks ago after posting cryptic social media posts (many of which involved Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, Aiyuk’s close friend and former college teammate).
To avoid being fined, he came to Niners training camp for the purpose of not participating in practice, but attending team meetings. His antics have garnered the attention of some people in the national media:
Aiyuk is set to make $14.1 million this season — the final year of his rookie contract — and according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, he wants to be making as much as the league’s top wideouts, or somewhere around double what he’s in line to make this year.
“Understand your value,” three-time Super Bowl champion Mark Schlereth, now a Fox Sports football analyst, said on his podcast last week. “… Brandon Aiyuk, understand where you are. Hey, do you deserve to get paid? Yeah, you deserve to get paid. But do you deserve to be a top-10 paid wide receiver in the National Football League? Absolutely not.”
Asked by co-host Mike Evans about Aiyuk and others’ decision to “hold in,” Schlereth unloaded.
“I think it’s chicken s—t,” he said. “Drop a set of n-ts and don’t show up. Or show up and, if you’re gonna show up and you’re gonna be around your teammates and you’re gonna be in the locker room, don’t let them go out and do all the work and you just sit around. Either have the balls to sit out or come to camp and participate. I think this ‘sit in’ stuff, it feels like it’s toothless to me.”
The Aiyuk situation has certainly taken center stage for the 49ers this off-season. It will be interesting to see if he remains on the 49ers or if they honor his trade request.
