The Dallas Cowboys’ defense had a trying day on Sunday. A pass rusher was carted off the practice field following a lower-body injury. The injury news surfaced hours after it was reported that the Cowboys would lose a member of their secondary due to retirement.
The Dallas Cowboys lost one defensive player on Sunday
The Cowboys came into training camp with depth problems on the defensive line and on the secondary. Cornerback Trevon Diggs is starting camp on the PUP list as he recovers from an injury he sustained last season.
With Diggs on the bench and Stephon Gilmore not re-signed, the Cowboys had disappointing news to report when they released former Oakland Raiders first-round pick Gareon Conley, as the 28-year-old cornerback plans to retire months after signing with Dallas.
Now, there are issues with the defensive line.
Sam Williams suffered a knee injury
According To Nick Harris with the Cowboys website, defensive end Sam Williams had to be carted off the practice field Sunday due to a knee injury:
“Williams did not put any pressure on his left leg coming off the field and immediately grabbed his left knee when he hit the grass.”
The Cowboys were counting on Williams to have a big year
The Cowboys drafted Williams in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. In his first two seasons in the league, he recorded 48 tackles, two forced fumbles, and 8.5 sacks. The Cowboys were counting on Williams to take a leap in year three, as they lack depth on the defensive line this season.
Per OurLads, Williams is listed as the backup for DeMarcus Lawrence.
As previously discussed on GH, the Cowboys were urged to look for help at the defensive end position. Former New York Jets pass rusher Carl Lawson was linked as potential help for the Cowboys. If Williams’ injury is severe, the Cowboys might start showing interest in Lawson early this week.
