The College Football Playoff is set to have the first round of games start on Friday night when the No. 7 Notre Dame Fighting Irish host the No. 10 Indiana Hoosiers at Notre Dame Stadium.
Notre Dame is one of a few teams on upset alert in the first round of the CFP. The Irish will face a motivated Hoosiers team under first-year head coach Curt Cignetti. SMU going into Happy Valley to knock off Penn State is another popular upset idea for Saturday.
The bowl season has been underway since Saturday, and an upset happened in Louisiana on Thursday night.
The Sam Houston State Bearkats played the Georgia Southern Eagles at the Caesars Superdome for the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl in front of a crowd of 13,151 fans.
A college football upset happened Thursday night
SHSU got off to a hot start on Thursday night, scoring the first points of the game on a 29-yard interception return from cornerback Jaylon Jimmerson. Jimmerson would record two interceptions of GA Southern quarterback JC French.
Sam Houston State would take a 21-10 lead into halftime before the Eagles were to mount a comeback. However, the Bearkats 10 second-half points would be enough to win the game in a 31-26 finish.
Per ESPN BET, GA Southern came into the game as 3.5-point favorites to win the New Orleans Bowl.
The Eagles outgained SHSU in total yards (393-267). However, turnovers were the story of how the Bearkats were able to pull off the upset. French threw four interceptions as GA Southern would commit five total turnovers to Sam Houston State’s one turnover.
With the win, the Bearkats won their third-ever bowl game and improved to 10-3 on the season. 2024 is the second season that Sam Houston State has competed in the FBS.
