The New Orleans Saints are being urged to address their quarterback situation by signing former Kansas City Chiefs backup and Super Bowl champion Carson Wentz. Following Derek Carr’s unexpected retirement, the Saints find themselves with an inexperienced quarterback room and limited options to stabilize their offense.

Currently, the Saints’ quarterback competition includes rookie Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler, and Jake Haener. While each has potential, none have proven themselves as reliable starters in the NFL. Bringing in Wentz, who has experience as both a starter and a backup, could provide the mentorship and depth  New Orleans needs to compete in the upcoming season.

Wentz’s career has seen highs, including an MVP-caliber season in 2017, but his recent inconsistency raises questions. After spending last season as Patrick Mahomes’ backup, Wentz is now one of the most experienced free agents available. Analysts suggest his addition could bridge the gap between rebuilding and maintaining a competitive edge for New Orleans.

New Orleans’ offense struggled last year, finishing with a 5-12 record, and head coach Kellen Moore is under pressure to turn things around. Wentz’s presence could bring stability and a veteran perspective to a young quarterback group. His ability to extend plays and manage games may also complement Moore’s vision for the team.

The Saints may do well next season if they successfully sign Wentz. This is detailed more in an analysis by Moe Moton for Bleacher Report.

In seven contests (six starts) as a rookie last season, Spencer Rattler threw for 1,317 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions, completing 57 percent of his passes. He’s the most experienced starter in the Saints’ quarterback room.

Perhaps rookie second-rounder Tyler Shough, Jake Haener and Rattler bring out the best in one another in a training camp battle. Still, the Saints should add veteran competition to challenge the young candidates. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Haener is dealing with an oblique injury. Wentz can push the young talent at the position. He could also provide a spark in the passing game with his big arm and ability to extend plays.

While concerns about Wentz’s recent performances remain valid, his experience far outweighs the risks for a team without a clear starting quarterback. Signing him could provide New Orleans with a valuable insurance policy while their younger players continue to develop.

For New Orleans, adding Wentz is not just about filling a roster spot—it’s about creating an environment where the team can grow and compete. With the 2025 season fast approaching, this move could be critical in shaping their path forward.
