Saban Should Make More Than Smart

Kirby Smart, the coach for Georgia, has a new contract that is worth $11.25 million per year. This makes him the highest paid coach in college football. Yes, this includes Nick Saban who makes around $10 million per year after his latest deal. Here’s the $11.25 million dollar question:

Should Kirby Smart make more money than Nick Saban?

No. This is the short answer though. We’re going to break it down.

To start, the most obvious reason is that Saban has had many more years of successful coaching, almost four times as many years as Smart. Saban has also had over 100 of his players go to the NFL. Then there’s Saban’s seven championships to Smart’s one. Additionally, we can’t really forget the whole Smart coaching under Saban thing. Personally, I think this adds a little spice to Smart winning over Saban in the 2022 National Championship. Don’t get it twisted though. There’s not any beef there. Saban actually says that he expected to lose to Kirby sooner or later.

I’m not saying that Smart isn’t good.

We all know that Smart is “good,” and his deserving of a hefty salary isn’t being questioned. However, it’s Nick Saban. Before passing Saban in compensation, shouldn’t there be at least half as many championships won? There’s really just no comparison in terms of experience. I’ll leave it at that since I was always taught that we don’t discuss someone’s salary anyway.

I totally agree! But in the harsh reality is once one coach gets paid to be the highest a few years ago, another gets paid more. Kind of like the QB’s in the NFL, always someone who shouldn’t be paid the highest , is paid.

Absolutely. Definitely not a clean cut answer.
