It has been an eventful National Signing Day. Rutgers signing day was a big one as the struggling team added much-needed depth at each position. Here, I look at the top Rutgers Signing Day recruits and why they will help the Scarlet Knights, as well as key takeaways. I will also provide a list of each recruit at the end after a big Rutgers signing day.
Rutgers Signing Day: Top Recruits
While Rutgers did not get the top national players, there were key pieces the team filled. It is too early to truly predict how a player will translate to college. Any of these players can turn into a star for the Scarlet Knights. Here are the top prospects that Rutgers has signed so far that can boost their team.
Dylan Braithwaite: Wide Reciever
On this Rutgers Signing day, wide receiver Dylan Braithwaite officially agreed to become a Scarlet Knight. Braithwaite signed his letter of intent back in June and stuck with his plan. The weakest link of the Scarlet Knights during the 2022 season was their offense. This added depth at the receiver position can help put more points on the board and get the team more wins.
Ajani Sheppard: Quarterback
Only one quarterback was announced on the Rutgers signing day. Ajani Sheppard signed his letter of intent with Rutgers back in November, and today it is official. Rutgers has had a poor season at the quarterback position. Although it can be assumed as of now that Gavin Wimsatt will remain the starter, the Scarlet Knights also had an injury issue at that position this past season. This means there is a chance for Sheppard to see the field in 2023.
Logan Blake: Tight End
Tight end Logan Blake is an important addition to the Scarlet Knights on this Rutgers signing day. In the 2022 season, tight end Johnny Langan was heavily relied on by the Rutgers offense. As he was a senior, the team will need a new player in that position they can depend on. Blake can be just the guy that Rutgers needs in 2023.
Rutgers Signing Day: Key takeaways
As of now, Rutgers has added four offensive linemen to this Scarlet Knights roster. This is key for a team with offensive struggles. According to ESPN, the quarterback was sacked 26 times this season. A better offensive line can give the quarterback more time to find one of their offensive targets open. There were only 11 passing touchdowns in 2022, and that can grow with stronger quarterback protection.
There was also an added depth to the linebacker position. Rutgers has a strong defense, but there needs to be more depth in that position, especially if there is an injury. Deion Jennings has played four years with Rutgers, and if he continues one more year, Jennings can help these young linebackers develop.
