New York Giants veteran quarterback Russell Wilson received the bigger thumbs up from head coach Brian Daboll, as Wilson was named the team’s QB1 ahead of the start of the 2025 season.

In a recent interview with the “Up & Adams” program, Newy Yrok Giants head coach Brian Daboll got honest on why he picked Russel Wilson as the starting QB over other quarterbacks in their roster, such as rookie Jaxson Dart and Jameis Winston.
“He (Russell Wilson) has a lot of experience,” Daboll said. “He’s played a lot of football. He’s played at a high level. I think he’s, he’s been good for our young players on both sides of the ball with how he approaches things, his process, his communication, still throws it well. He’s looked good in camp. He’s down a little bit in weight. He’s moving around pretty good. So I think a lot of guys have a lot of confidence in him.”

Daboll added that with the experience and years in the league behind him, Wilson is poised to be a leader for other QBs on their roster.
In 2024, Russel Wilson threw for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions. After his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Wilson signed a one-year, $10.5 million contract with the New York Giants in the offseason because he thought he could help stabilize a franchise that was in rebuilding mode..
Russel Wilson Praises Rookie QB
In a recent sit-down with NFL Network’s Judy Battista, veteran quarterback Russell Wilson lauded the New York Giants’ rookie signal-caller Jaxson Dart for both his arm strength and cerebral approach.
Wilson highlighted Dart’s ability to make a wide array of throws and underscored the young quarterback’s self-assurance and eagerness to absorb new information as standout traits early in camp.

Dart, the Giants’ first-round selection at No. 25, stumbled a bit from the start in his first reps – his first ever pass in practice was intercepted and returned for a touchdown. The mantra of “next play” from Wilson was certainly present in the building, and by the end of practice on Friday, Dart had connected with fellow rookie Cam Skattebo for a touchdown showing some real progress in his development.
Given Wilson’s firm establishment as New York’s Week 1 starter, he stated, it was vitally important to establish a competitive, yet supportive quarterback room.
Russel Wilson aspires to hasten Dart’s development with veteran Jameis Winston fine by providing advice and setting a high standard every day, but mainly, he is starting to prepare Dart for the role of future franchise quarterback.
