Five-star quarterback Julian Lewis was initially committed to USC’s 2025 class. However, Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes continued to recruit Lewis, forcing him to decommit from the Trojans and commit to the Buffaloes in November, 2024.

When Lewis signed with Colorado in December, many thought he would be the starting quarterback in the 2025 season. However, Coach Prime held him back until this week.
Sanders has now declared Lewis as Colorado’s QB1 for the upcoming game against West Virginia. Meanwhile, the WVU defensive coordinator Zac Alley had high praise for the new Colorado starter.
“He can sling the ball over the field,” Alley said on Tuesday. “He runs well. He’s shifty in the pocket, gets away from people. I don’t know for sure what he did in high school, but based on the tape of what he does now he looks like a great player.
“He’s still a freshman. All freshmen have growing pains anywhere at any position across the country, but I think he’s got a chance to be an elite talent, just from his arm and his ability to scramble, see the field.”
Before joining Sanders’ squad, Lewis threw for more than 10,000 yards and 140+ touchdowns throughout three seasons at Carrollton High School in Georgia
Lewis finished his Carrollton career with a 39-4 record and was even named Gatorade Georgia Football Player of the Year in the 2024 season.
Deion Sanders Reveals The Reason For Declaring Julian Lewis As Starter
Following the announcement of making Lewis the starter, Sanders hinted that the move was already in motion even before it was made public.
“That’s up to you to notice,” Sanders said. “They may have already happened. I don’t do stuff and blow the whistles and make major announcements, ‘Hey!’ I don’t do that kind of stuff.
“I do it and I let you guys still take shots. You don’t even know, you may be shooting at the wrong target. So some things take place that you may not be privy to.”
The decision to start Lewis followed his solid performance in the Buffaloes’ loss to the Arizona Wildcats. He entered the game in the third quarter and finished with 121 passing yards. Sanders praised Lewis’ ability to read the defense and adapt on the field
“The good thing is that he got the ball out in certain situations,” Sanders said. “He saw what was coming, what was happening. He received information and tried to apply it — what he was receiving through the headset, which he did a good job about that.”
The Buffaloes are coming off back-to-back blowout losses. It remains to be seen
whether this gamble on the young quarterback can help the team bounce back.
