The Texas Longhorns are 5-0 in the 2024 college football season. Quinn Ewers did not start the last two games for Texas and Arch Manning started for him. The Longhorns are on a bye this week before they face the Oklahoma Sooners and the Georgia Bulldogs in back-to-back weeks.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian has a decision to make about the quarterback situation before they place the Oklahoma Sooners. The Texas Longhorns are one of the most polarizing teams in all of college football this season.
Texas Longhorns Expected To Start Quinn Ewers Over Arch Manning After the Bye Week Against the Oklahoma Sooners
There will be rough waters ahead for the Texas Longhorns as head coach Steve Sarkisian mentioned it after the game against the Mississippi State Bulldogs. A source close to the situation told horns247.com that Quinn Ewers is expected to be the starting quarterback for Texas against Oklahoma barring any setbacks.
This is huge news for the Longhorns because this shows that he has been making massive progress with his abdominal/oblique injury. Head coach Steve Sarkisian said on Monday about Ewers’s injury progress:
“”We haven’t had any setbacks. It’s been steady progress. I think he’s getting stronger and more comfortable and more confident, and so we’ll just kind of stay the course with that.”
It will be interesting to see how Ewers responded this week and next week before the Sooners game. Practice over the next couple of weeks will also be very important. Steve Sarkisian also added:
“We always look to every player, but most notably the quarterback, when he gets injured, we want to pull him in even tighter. “We want to pull him in even closer. When we’re at practice, Quinn is engaged. He’s in every meeting. He’s talking about the game plan.”
Comparing Stats
Quinn Ewers has only played in three games this season for the Longhorns. He has completed 73.4% of his passes for 691 yards, eight touchdowns, and two interceptions. Ewers has also rushed for one yard on six carries and zero touchdowns, along with averaging 0.2 yards per carry.
Arch Manning so far this season has completed 70.5% of his passes for 900 yards, nine touchdowns, and two interceptions. He has also rushed for 82 yards on 13 carries and three touchdowns, along with averaging 6.3 yards per carry.
Before Ewers got hurt, he was in the running for the Heisman Trophy. Now, it feels like he would be the best option for the Texas Longhorns despite Arch Manning playing well. Manning will no doubt be a future starting quarterback for this football program, but Ewers feels like he is the best player to lead them to a National Title this season.
