There have been a lot of New York Giants fans who have been upset with owner John Mara over the past several years. Ever since winning Super Bowl XLVI against the New England Patriots, it appears as if the Giants organization has been in a tailspin.
They have missed the playoffs in most years, except for two years. The most recent playoff appearance for the Giants was in 2022, but it feels like a century ago for this fanbase. There has been regression since the first year of Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen running the show.
The Athletic’s Mike Sando Reports That AN NFL Executive Believes New York Giants Owner John Mara Would Have Brought Back Saquon Barkley But Didn’t Want To “Meddle”
Some thought that Giants owner John Mara meddled when the Giants re-signed Daniel Jones to a four-year $160 million deal. However, things were different when dealing with Saquon Barkley this summer. Mara wanted to bring Barkley back, but Joe Schoen wanted to go in a different direction.
Schoen didn’t want to give him $12 million a year just for a $40 million quarterback to hand the football off to. A long-tenured exec told Mike Sando of The Athletic about the Giants not re-signing Saquon Barkley this offseason:
“My feel is [team owner] John Mara, if not for Hard Knocks, would have put his foot down [to stop Barkley from leaving], but he didn’t want to be perceived as meddling.”
Another exec also added to Sando:
“The owner is thinking, ‘Barkley has been one of our best players for years, the players on the team respect him and I don’t want him to beat us twice. But the fact of the matter is, the Giants aren’t very good and they may lose to Philly twice anyway.”
Saquon Barkley Scores Three Touchdowns Against the Green Bay Packers
Barkley played a huge role for the Philadelphia Eagles in their 34-29 win over the Green Bay Packers on Friday night. Saquon Barkley had three total touchdowns and over 100 yards from scrimmage. He has more touchdowns right now than the New York Giants offense combined.
The fact that the Giants got rid of their best playmaker only makes general manager Joe Schoen’s seat hotter because of how bad quarterback Daniel Jones has been. If Barkley goes off on the Giants twice this season, especially in the October 20 game, it won’t be pretty for John Mara and the rest of the organization.
