Report: Florida Gators Billy Napier Could Save His Job

The Florida Gators defeated Samford on Saturday 45-7. This comes a week after Florida was humiliated at home against the Miami Hurricanes. There has been a lot of criticism about head coach Billy Napier in his third season with the Gators.

This weekend, they will host the Texas A&M Aggies in SEC Conference play. One of the biggest stories for the Florida Gators this past weekend was freshman quarterback D.J. Lagway, who set records in his first start. He completed 72.0% of his passes for 456 yards and three touchdowns. Lagway also rushed for 16 yards on five carries and zero touchdowns, along with averaging 3.2 yards per carry.

Andy Staples Thinks That Billy Napier of the Florida Gators Could Have His Job Saved

Andy Staples of Andy and Ari On3 had a podcast on Monday. They talked about the Gators current head coach. Staples said:

“Texas A&M is a three and a half point favorite at Florida. Ari you and I did a video Sunday night, just begging Billy Napier to start DJ Lagway. We don’t yet know what’s going to happen. I have a sense that maybe it’s going to be DJ Lagway in this game, and I think that gives Florida a better chance. But I don’t know how much of a chance, because, again, he played great against Samford … so he played against Miami, and he did lead them on a touchdown drive. He’s a very good quarterback, like he’s accurate, he can throw the ball downfield with the flick of his wrist, and he can hit people in stride. These are things that haven’t been happening in Florida, even with Anthony Richardson, who was obviously very athletically gifted, had a great arm, went number four in the draft, but Anthony Richardson was not the most accurate quarterback … (Graham Mertz) doesn’t give Billy Napier a chance to save his job, (DJ) does give Billy Napier a chance to save his job.”

Graham Mertz could very well play against the Aggies, but that will not sit well with the Gators fanbase. They plan on using a two-quarterback system with Mertz and D.J. Lagway. However, the two-quarterback system may be over with rather quickly.

Brutal Schedule Down the Stretch

The Gators schedule in November will be brutal for head coach Billy Napier and the rest of the team. They won’t beat the Georgia Bulldogs, the Texas Longhorns, or the Ole Miss Rebels on their schedule. Florida will also face the LSU Tigers and the Florida State Seminoles in the month of November.

If Florida goes 2-3 in that stretch depending on what their record is by the time November rolls around, Billy Napier’s job could be saved. What also could save his job is freshman quarterback D.J. Lagway.
