Yet again, we are reacting to Madden ratings over here at Gridiron Heroics. As this series continues to tackle the ratings of the Buffalo Bills’ players, none will be bigger than quarterback Josh Allen’s placement.
On Friday morning, the ratings dropped, so let’s react to where Allen ended up.
Josh Allen (92)
After the roller coaster ride that was the 2021 Bills season, that they ended 13 seconds away from playing the AFC Championship game at home was a testament to how good that team was at its peak. They led the NFL in point differential, and were Football Outsiders’ No. 2 team in DVOA.
In a similar way Allen had a bit of an up-and-down season, but when he was on point, he was elite. His 92 rating in Madden 23 ranks fourth among all quarterbacks, as he only trails Tom Brady (97), Aaron Rodgers (96), and Patrick Mahomes (95).
Guys Allen ranks above include Joe Burrow (90), Dak Prescott (89), Justin Herbert (88), Lamar Jackson (87), Russell Wilson (87), and Super Bowl champion Matthew Stafford (85). Personally, I feel Herbert should be around the same rating as Allen, as one can argue he had a more consistent season.
Ultimately, I think fourth at 92 is very fair to Allen. Like I said, while he didn’t have a season as consistent as the one in 2020, his high points were higher than any point in his prior career. Allen was seeing more of the field, made smarter throws, and elevated his poise to a higher level by the end of the regular season.
Lastly, let’s also consider that Allen is the MVP favorite in many sports betting books, and that’s more of a reason why the people at Electronic Arts are excited for what he can do for the rest of his 20s. Who knows, perhaps in 2023 we’ll see Allen make his way toward the 99 club.
