Despite little expectation to begin the post-Tom Brady era, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are fresh off a playoff appearance in 2023. Tampa Bay, behind offseason acquisition Baker Mayfield, went 9-8, winning the NFC South and beating the Philadelphia Eagles during Super Wild Card Weekend. Offseason signees have played a significant role in the Buccaneers’ streak of four straight postseason appearances, highlighted by a Super Bowl win in 2020. However, one 2024 offseason addition was notably absent from training camp on Monday.
According to NFL insider Ari Meirov, defensive end Randy Gregory was missing from the start of team training camp on Monday. In a corresponding move, the Bucs placed Gregory on the reserve/did not report list. Additionally, Gregory was a no-show during voluntary offseason workouts and the team’s mandatory three-day minicamp in June.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers DE Randy Gregory: Absent From Training Camp
Randy Gregory’s first season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is undoubtedly off to a rough start. After missing the mandatory minicamp in June and being notably absent from voluntary offseason workouts, Gregory did not report to training camp on Monday. The Nebraska product signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the NFC South club this offseason after spending last year split between the Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers. Gregory played in all three postseason games for the 49ers last year, collecting five tackles and one TFL. He finished the regular season with 20 tackles, six TFLs, and 3.5 sacks.

Per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, Gregory’s absence remains a mystery, with the team unaware of his whereabouts since signing a one-year deal in April. Under the collective bargaining agreement, Gregory will receive a $50 thousand fine for every day missed “plus one week’s paragraph five salary for each preseason game missed.”
Gregory: Entering Age-32 Season
Randy Gregory entered the NFL in 2015 as a second-round draft selection, spending his first seven years with the Dallas Cowboys. Gregory accumulated 85 tackles, 19 TFLs, and 16.5 sacks during that stretch before landing with the Denver Broncos in 2021. The Nebraska product tied a career-high with six sacks. However, Denver dealt Gregory midway through the following season.
Gregory’s NFL career got off to a rocky start, falling in the 2015 NFL Draft after testing positive for Marijuana at the combine. The NFL suspended Gregory for four games in 2016 after violating the league’s substance abuse policy. The league suspended him for ten additional games after a second failed drug test. After a third failed drug test, the NFL suspended Gregory for the entirety of the 2017 season. The NFL suspended Gregory Indefinity in 2019 for again violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
