One of Aaron Rodgers’ favorite targets with the Green Bay Packers and a former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver appears to have retired, According to a press release from his new employer, ESPN. The announcement comes days before most veterans in the league will report for training camp.
Update: Cobb’s new employer changes story, says the player is not retired
Former Dallas Cowboys WR is set to join the SEC Network
According to the press release, Cobb will work as an analyst for the SEC Network this fall:
Former NFL Pro Bowler Randall Cobb is set to join SEC Network as a college football studio analyst. Cobb played in the NFL for 13 seasons, including 10 years with the Green Bay Packers. He will appear on select editions of SEC Now throughout the fall and will also join co-host Alyssa Lang on Out of Pocket Presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors to fuse football and fun each week.
Cobb hasn’t announced his retirement on social media since the 2023 season ended. However, it was considered possible the 33-year-old wide receiver might retire following a season with his former Packers teammate, Rodgers, in New York.
Former Green Bay Packers WR said he wasn’t retired in June
Per an interview published in June by the Milwaukee Sentinal Journal. Cobb said he hadn’t decided to retire, but no teams were interested in signing him before training camp:
“I haven’t made any kind of decision,” but as he noted “someone’s got to want you, too.”
“Everybody ages out of this league at some point,” Cobb acknowledged. “A matter of when, how. I’m kind of in that position now, if I want to go out on my own terms, I can. And I’ll be happy.”
ESPN states Randall Cobb is retired from playing in the NFL
Cobb’s timeline of events appears different than what ESPN published in their press release. ESPN wrote twice that Cobb had indeed retired and that he made the decision to retire after he was inducted into the Kentucky Pro Sports Hall of Fame:
Cobb retired after the 2023 NFL season and was inducted into the Kentucky Pro Sports Hall of Fame shortly before his retirement.
It was unclear when Cobb was inducted into the Kentucky Pro Sports Hall of Fame. However, he was inducted into the Kentucky Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2022. So, one wonders if ESPN might have mixed up a few details in the release.
Cobb finished his 13-year NFL career with 630 receptions for 7,624 yards receiving and 54 touchdowns. He made the Pro Bowl for the 2014 season. Cobb spent most of his career with Rodgers and the Packers.
However, Cobb had a successful season with the Cowboys during the 2019 campaign. He recorded 55 receptions for 828 yards and three touchdowns in 2019. He spent this 2020 season with the Texans before signing with the Packers in 2021.
Rodgers helped to give Cobb one more shot at a Super Bowl with the Jets in the 2023 season. He caught five passes for 39 yards and one touchdown for the Jets last season.
