The LA Rams are traveling to fridged Lambeau Field to take on the Green Bay Packers for a Monday Night showdown. The Rams and Packers have had some historical moments over the last 20 years and have even met in the playoff. But this year, the postseason might have little to do with this Rams and Packers game.
The Rams are coming off of a thrilling Thursday night win against the Raiders in which we saw the emergence of newly signed Baker Mayfield. Mayfield is on his redemption tour after being traded and released all in the same year and looking to boost his stock for free agency. The win came after overcoming a 16-3 deficit with under 5 minutes left to improve LA’s record to 4-9.
The Packers are coming off a bye week which they needed ever so desperately. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been dealing with a broken thumb, and the whole team, in general, required a mental reset. Coming into this matchup, Green Bay sits at 5-8. If playoffs implications are riding on this game, it would be very little, but the Rams and Packers both need a win.

Rams And Packers History:
The Rams and Packers first played in 1937 in October, which the Packers won 35-10 on the road. From that point until 1945, Green Bay won 11 of the next 13 contests. Over the 14-game span, Green Bay scored 27.6 points per game. The Rams turned the tide in 1948, winning the next 11 contests, during which they scored 38 points per game. Starting in December of 1960, Green Bay returned the favor winning the seven meetings, scoring 27.6 points per game. Due to this, the all-time regular season record is tied 46-46-2.
The Rams and Packers are two of the older organizations in the NFL, hence why the Packers have 787 wins (most in All-Time) and the Rams are sitting eighth all-time with 603 wins. The Rams just became the newest member of the 600-win club in September with a win over the Arizona Cardinals (9th all-time). The Rams and Packers are two of just six teams to have 30 playoff berths and over 25 playoff wins.
During this matchup’s history, the Rams hold the head-to-head in terms of the largest victory. On October 2nd, 1949, the Rams thrashed the Packers 48-7. The 41-point win is the largest of any win either team has against the other. However, Green Bay holds four rings over LA’s head compared to the Rams two, and they hold two playoff wins over LA.
Rams And Packers Playoff History:
The Rams and Packers have met on three occasions in the postseason. Green Bay holds two of those victories, with the most recent coming in 2020 at the tundra of Lambeau Field in a 32-18 divisional-round win. Aaron Rodgers shredded the number one ranked Rams defense while the defense had some issues with a nine-fingered Jared Goff freshly off having a metal rod put into his throwing thumb.

The other Packers postseason victory came in 1967 in the form of a 28-7 blowout on their way to a second Lombardi trophy win. The Rams got their payback in 2002 when the Rams defense forced eight turnovers on Brett Favre and company en route to a 45-17 win at home. The Rams, then in St. Louis, made their way to the Super Bowl that year but came up short to the Patriots.
Both of these teams have excellent playoff histories. Of course, the 30+ playoff berths but remarkably, the Packers made the playoffs 35 times, and 31 of those times were as the division winner. For the Rams, they’ve made the playoffs 21 times as the division winner and 10 times as a wild card. The craziest part of this comparison? The Rams have 10 fewer playoff appearances, and they both have five conference championships.
Rams and Packers In 2022:
It’s safe to say that both of these teams have struggled far more than seasons prior and for different reasons. The Rams have 13 players on IR, which includes Quarterback Matthew Stafford, WR Cooper Kupp, and a slew of offensive linemen. Jumble that all up, and you get the wretched season the Rams have put together. The Rams rank 32nd in the league in yards per play with 4.7 while scoring a 29th-ranked 16.7 points per game. On the flip side of the ball, LA gives up 22.7 points per game and has only sacked the QB 26 times which is abysmal from where they were last season.
Green Bay is better at scoring, posting a 32.6 score % compared to the Rams 30.7. The offense averages 20.2 points per game, good for 23rd in the league. The young Rodgers-led offense averages 5.6 yards per play which is good for 13th in the league. The defensive unit has played pretty well, giving up 23.2 points per game but only recorded 24 sacks in the campaign.

The Roundup:
Both teams come into this game needing a win to stay alive in the playoff race and sitting in 3rd place in their respective divisions. The last meeting went to the Packers in a 36-28 win at home. The Rams are 4-9, including the playoffs in the previous 13 matchups with the Packers dating back to 1997.
It’s been a very rocky road for both squads, who are separated by a game in a matchup that won’t be easy. With frigid temperatures projected for Monday night and possible snow, things couldn’t be any more difficult for these struggling offenses. Will Baker heat up chilly Green Bay? Or will it be Rodgers shredding the LA defense once again?
