The Las Vegas Raiders will have a lot more to play for this year than just the record next to their name.  One of their stars, who had done so much for the team and the organization, has left us too soon.

A special tribute to a fan was paid by the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday in memory of a legend who passed away:

Per an obituary in the Times-Herald, Steve Mortara died from an accidental drowning at his home.

Mortara was known as a super fan of the Raiders. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio for his avid fandom of the team.

“Steve soon became known as “Raider Mort” throughout the Bay Area. He hosted a TV show called Raider Talk Raw and a radio program called The Raider Mort Report,” the obituary reads. “And Steve was also an NFL analyst for a radio show titled The Game. Steve’s master of ceremonies work included serving as MC for Oakland Raiders’ team milestones.”

On Sunday night, the Raiders released a statement remembering the Hall of Fame fan.

“The Raiders Family mourns the passing of Steve Mortara, better known to fans everywhere as “Raider Mort.” A deeply passionate fan of the Silver and Black and a cherished part of the Raider Nation, Mort attended games all over the world and supported the Raiders with a rare and ardent fervor,” the statement reads.

“An expert on team history and trivia, Mort’s life-long love of the Raiders was an inspiration to fans everywhere. The prayers of the Raider Nation are with Mort’s family at this time.”

Fans were quick to react to this news:

“Mort was a regular caller to Gary Radnich’s great radio show. Miss those days. Condolences to his family and friends.”

“Who else pays tribute to their fans like this … Raiders have to be one of the most classy organizations in history and I’m proud to be part of the nation”

    “RIP Raider Mort”
