Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers made his return against Oklahoma on October 12th, 2024, in The Red River Rivalry. Ewers had been injured since the Longhorns’ week 3 matchup against UTSA on September 14th, 2024, where they won 56-7. In that game, Quinn was ruled out in the 2nd quarter due to an oblique injury.
In Quinn’s absence, backup quarterback Arch Manning had 806 passing yards and 8 touchdowns through 3 games. Arch’s breakout game came against UTSA where he accumulated 223 passing yards and 2 touchdowns. The Longhorns didn’t have a lack of production with Arch at the helm. Quinn Ewers was out three games, but he came back against Oklahoma and was ready to roll.

Quinn Ewers’ Game vs Oklahoma
Versus Oklahoma in the 2024 Red River Rivalry, Quinn Ewers went 20/29 for 199 yards passing with 1 touchdown and an interception, while carrying the ball 4 times for 3 yards and a touchdown.
In the first quarter, Quinn seemed to be a bit shaky, missing multiple throws that he normally didn’t and would make you scratch your head. Some of those were when receivers were wide open, and the ball was either too high or too low. He tried to extend some plays and get out of the pocket but didn’t have much success in doing so.
In the second quarter, Ewers got settled in, throwing a touchdown pass to tight end Gunnar Helm, who had 5 catches for 91 yards and a touchdown on the day.
The offense started to improve from then on and beyond. The Longhorns were hitting on all cylinders, catching fans and the defense by surprise with multiple trick plays. Although they only accomplished one of them.
Even though Quinn only had 1 touchdown pass, he looked in command of the offense as the game went on. The scheme was kept standard and not out of the ordinary. Not much had changed with him being back in the lineup. Some would say he was just rusty from missing so much time. Texas also relied heavily on their run game, rushing for 177 yards, so not much of the offensive production was placed solely on Quinn’s shoulders. Running back Quintrevion Wisner had a heck of a game, totaling 13 carries for 118 yards and a touchdown, adding to that keen rushing attack that Texas has.

Quinn is a dynamic quarterback who can run and pass the ball efficiently. His mobility and quickness serve him well when he faces defenses that are especially equipped with speed. Quinn Ewers was a Heisman Trophy contender before his injury, but it is believed that he can return to full form once he starts to play more games this season. If that was his last Red River Rivalry game as a Texas Longhorn, then he would be going out on top.
The Longhorns defeated Oklahoma in a 34-3 blowout win putting them at 6-0 for the season and maintaining their number 1 ranking. Texas has a big home game against Georgia coming up on October 19th, 2024.
