Being named player of the week is a huge honor for anyone, to know that you put up one of the best performances across the league. This week’s honors boast big names such as Saquon Barkley and Patrick Mahomes. However, there are some new names such as rookie, Cade York, and second-year cornerback, Zech McPherson.
AFC Offensive Player of the Week
It isn’t surprising that one of the best quarterbacks in the league holds this honor in week one. Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, put on an absolute show as they steamrolled through the Cardinals 44-21. He posted a 76.9% completion rating with 360 yards through the air and 5 touchdowns. Along with that, he boasted a superb 154.6 QBR. It was uncertain how he would do with the departure of big-time threat, Tyreek Hill, but he showed he can still get it done with the other weapons he has at his disposal.
NFC OPOW
After battling injuries throughout his whole NFL career, Barkley hushed the critics with his week one performance. He seemed to be doing whatever he wanted on the field while racking up 164 yards on the ground on 18 touches and one touchdown. Barkley also caught six passes for 30 yards. He also punched in the game-winning two-point conversion to put the Giants up 21-20 and secure the win against the Titans.

AFC DPOW
The Steelers might not have looked the most lethal offensively in their week one bout with the Bengals, but their defense appeared to be in mid-season form. Led by safety, Minkah Fitzpatrick, they came away with the win against the reigning AFC champs. Fitzpatrick finished with a game high 14 tackles. Along with that, an electrifying pick-six to put Pittsburgh up 7-0 early on in the game. He also came up with a block on the game-winning extra point which then forced the game to overtime.
NFC DPOW
Seattle’s linebacker, Uchenna Nwosu, grabbed the honors for NFC DPOY in week one. He, along with the Seattle defense, helped fight off the Broncos for a 17-16 victory. Nwosu tallied seven tackles, one sack, and one forced fumble as he was all over the field wreaking havoc.
AFC Special Teams Player of the Week
In his first game in the NFL, Browns rookie kicker, Cade York, grabbed the honor of AFC Special Teams POTW. He received the honor after following a 58-yard game-winning field goal against the Panthers. It “was the second-longest game-winning field goal for a rookie in the final two minutes of regulation or in overtime,” per NFL Research. With that field goal, York finished a perfect 4-4 on field goals and 2-2 on extra points.
NFC Special Teams Player of the Week
Even though special team’s players might not get as much love as others, the Eagles, Zech McPherson, proved his worth against the Lions. He came up with two special teams tackles while also recovering an onside kick on the way to an Eagles 38-35 victory.
