Previously we looked at A&M’s ChUG play, today we’re looking at a variation of that play, Lead Trap. Like ChUG, Lead Trap involves a center-guard fold block, except this time the center makes the down block. Similar to Q Hammer Bash, the backside guard and tackle both pull on Lead Trap. The difference with Lead Trap and these other plays is lead trap attacks the interior of the defense.
Play Concept
The Lead Trap is a specific concept Jimbo Fisher uses to attack a specific alignment. If the defensive line features two defensive tackles in a 2i alignment, Lead Trap is the play Fisher called.
A&M aligns in 11 personnel with trips receivers to the field and the TE to the boundary. The RB is aligned to the right of the QB strongside. At the snap, the three receivers push vertical and stalk block. LT blocks the WDE and goes second level to block the WLB when he feels the LG take over his block. LG blocks weak 2i until RG bumps him off, widening 2i, then LG takes over LT’s block on the edge. C blocks down on strong 2i. RG folds under center’s block and blocks weak 2i. RT pulls through hole created by center and RG widening the 2i tackles and lead blocks on the MLB. TE blocks strongside edge. RB meshes with QB, takes handoff, and follows RT’s lead block on MLB. QB makes handoff and runs backside.
Another way of looking at this play is the down block by the center and trap block by the RG allow the RT to pull up inside and iso block the RB. This is an inside trap which results in an iso block on the MLB similar to an iso play.
Executing Leap Trap
At the snap, all three field receivers go vertical and stalk block. LT Dan Moore blocks the weak edge and moves to the second level to take the WLB when he is bumped off by LG Jared Hocker. Hocker blocks the weak 21 and is bumped over to weakside edge by RG Kenyon Green’s trap block on the 2i, creating the hole. Center Colton Prater down blocks on the strongside 2i, widening the hole. RT Carson Green pulls inside the hole and blocks the MLB. RB Isaiah Spiller takes the handoff from Kellen Mond, runs through the tunnel, and cuts inside Green’s iso block on the MLB. The result of the play is an 8 yard gain.
