There are many ways to attack a Cover 3 defense. Today we’re looking at how A&M uses a Double Outs Post Drag concept to attack Cover 3. Double Outs Post Drag gives the QB five potential receivers at four different levels of the field. The concept combines horizontal and vertical stretches to force defenses to cover the whole field.
Play Concept
7-Ins, or post double-ins, is a three-man concept uses to attack Cover 1. Double Outs Post Drag takes that same concept and inverts it. The two out routes by the TE and RB attack the right flat and give the QB two easy short reads. Post route by the slot attacks the middle safety (only safety in Cover 1) and forces him deep. The post route clears the way for the X receiver’s drag route from the weakside numbers to the playside numbers 22 yards down the field. QB reads post-drag-outs in his progression.
Executing Double Outs Post Drag
A&M is in 11 personnel and Mississippi State is showing Cover 3.
At the snap, TE Jalen Wydermyer check releases to an out route. Field receiver Jalen Preston flows into his drag route. Slot Ainias Smith runs a post route, and boundary receiver Demond Demas pushes vertical. Isaiah Spiller runs a check-release into his out route. Smith’s post route forces the middle safety into coverage. Demas’ vertical route rakes the right safety with him. CB covering Preston releases him to the safeties. Left safety sees him dragging across to releases him to middle and strong safeties. Smith and Demas cleared the way, Preston catches the ball wide open 22 yards down the field.
Play result is a 38 yard gain and a first down.
Field Camera View
With the field camera view, you can see the pass protection that allows Zach Calzada time to go over the top down the field. You see both Wydermyer and Spiller’s check-releases before their out routes, and Smith going into his post route.
