With the 2025 NFL season coming up quickly, the Pittsburgh Steelers have a big decision to make. T.J. Watt still has not been signed to a long-term contract extension and there are major questions about his future with the team.
It is still widely expected that the two sides will be able to work something out. However, Watt is not going to cave to what the Steelers are offering and the team does not seem close to caving to his demands either.
Should this situation continue forward much longer, Pittsburgh will be forced to make a difficult decision. Do they open up to the idea of trading Watt? Or, do they simply cave and give the superstar what he wants.
That is a question that could change the landscape of the NFL.
Keeping that in mind, the Steelers have been linked to a shocking trade including Watt ahead of the season. It would involve the superstar pass rusher being shipped to an NFC contender.

FanSided analyst Wynston Wilcox took a look at the only team that he feels would be able to make the right offer for Pittsburgh. He thinks that team is the Washington Commanders, who could ship star wide receiver Terry McLaurin back to the Steelers.

“Terry McLaurin is in the middle of contract talks with the Washington Commanders and they might have some incentive to offload McLaurin for Watt,” Wilcox wrote. “It actually is a balanced trade if you think about it. The Steelers get yet another weapon for Aaron Rodgers and he’s young enough to be part of the future after Rodgers. ”
Obviously, keeping Watt in town would be a much better option than trading him to the Commanders for McLaurin. But, if the two sides can’t come to any kind of agreement, this trade could make sense.
McLaurin is coming off of a 2024 season with Washington that saw him rack up 82 receptions for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns in 17 games. He would form a lethal one-two punch for Aaron Rodgers alongside of DK Metcalf.
Expect to continue hearing rumors about Watt in the coming days. Hopefully, the team will be able to work out terms to keep him in town, but if not the trade rumors will continue to grow louder.
