Russell Wilson is being ruled questionable for Sundays game against Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Wilson aggervated his calf in practice this week and if the Steelers find it more beneficial to stay behind in Pittsburgh.
If Wilson is deemed to stay behind Justin Fields will get the nod to start. Over the summer is training camp the competition between Wilson and Fields was a close one. Either quarterback can be the starting quarterback. Now that Wilson is injured it will be a set back for him but for Justin Fields to prove he can be the starter. Which Head Coach Mike Tomlin is fully aware that Fields can lead the Steelers. The competition was close than he expected in training camp.
Russell Wilson came from Denver this off season to the Steelers. Wilson had a tough year in in Denver and it did not go as planned with Head Coach Sean Payton. The Steelers signed Wilson due to the lack of quarterback position in Pittsburgh. Despite signing Wilson and deeming him a starter at the end of Pre-season he is now doubtful for week one where back-up quarterback Justin Fields can prove he can be the starter for the Steelers.
Justin Fields was the starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears last season. Fields had a QBR of 86.3, 16 touchdowns, nine interceptions and threw for 2,562 yards. The Bears ended up trading Fields to the Steelers and the Bear went with number one pick in the draft Caleb Williams.
When Fields was asked about the situation with Russell Wilson possibly being ruled out of Sundays game against Atlanta he said “I always prepare like I’m the starter.” The Steelers are confident in Fields as a starter.
Time will tell on Saturday if Russell Wilson stays behind in Pittsburgh for the benefit of seeking treatment and rehabbing his calf or if the calf injury is not as bad and he plays for the Steelers in Atlanta on Sunday. Either way the Mike Tomlin and the Steelers will be ready for either starting quarterback.
Steeler fans will anxiously waiti for the Steelers to announce their starter for Sundays game. Its been a back and forth situation in Pittsburgh and a close and competitive competition between Wilson and Fields.
