Pittsburgh Steelers: Ben Roethlisberger Takes Clear Stance On Russell Wilson Vs. Justin Fields Debate

The Pittsburgh Steelers are off to a solid start in their first two games, taking home two victories with Justin Fields as their starter. Now it is being reported that Fields will continue to be the starter in week 3.

Many analysts have taken the side that when Russell Wilson is healthy, he should be inserted into the starting lineup. Others believe that Fields is already the starter at this point in the season, no matter when Wilson is healthy.

The Steelers won two Super Bowls with future Hall of Fame quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and he knows just a thing or two about what it means to be the starter in Pittsburgh. Ben has now weighed in on who he feels should be the starter moving forward, and it has Steelers fans buzzing.

Ben was recently interviewed about many things Steelers and NFL, and he has a firm stance on Justin Fields as the starter for the team.

Earlier this week another former Super Bowl champion James Jones said that in his estimation, Fields has already won the job and won’t be giving it back:

“I think it’s a wrap for Russ. I do,” Jones admitted. “I think the only way Russell Wilson starts is if Justin Fields gives him the job back by playing bad football. And the main reason I say that is they have Denver next — they could win that on defense. Then they got the Chargers — they could win that on defense. Then they got the Colts — they could win that on defense. So what I’m saying is, if you don’t go out and play bad… I don’t know how you take [Fields] out.

Jones went on to point out that Fields is far younger than Wilson, and that the team wants him as the starter long-term.

“The Pittsburgh Steelers want Justin Fields to start,” he added. “Justin Fields is younger. You traded nothing for him — a sixth-round pick and you get the best out of him and you’re winning football games? What more would you want as a head coach? … I think it’s a wrap for Russ. … They’ll be 4-0 going into the Cowboys game and I don’t think that coach Mike Tomlin could keep him out of the lineup.”

Big Ben has now come out and shared every similar sentiment, saying that Fields should undoubtedly be the starter for this year. Ben was quoted saying:

“If Russ is heathy, I’m sticking with Justin.”

Steelers fans seem to mostly be in agreement with Ben.

While there are a few fans who want to see what Wilson can do, the huge majority of them seem to be siding with Ben on this one. Fields has looked solid so far and he can build on these wins moving forward.
