The Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting quarterback battle between Justin Fields and Russell Wilson is one of the most fascinating across the NFL this summer.

After Wilson suffered a calf injury that sidelined him for the first several days of training camp practices, the door was open for Fields to get extra snaps with the first-team offense, including dynamic playmaking wide receiver George Pickens and the rest of the Steelers’ starters.
For his part, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is impressed by what Fields put on tape in his first-team reps.
“We’ve got two really capable guys,” Tomlin told reporters. “We’re going to create an environment where they get an opportunity to compete and see where they’re capable of.
“Justin has really taken advantage of the opportunity for additional snaps because Russ has been out some the first week. Really just excited about the trajectory of it. Excited to continue to go with the process and having them display their skills.”
Justin Fields, Russell Wilson Set to Battle for Pittsburgh Steelers’ Job

Pittsburgh acquired Fields, betting on his potential as a former first-round pick, in exchange for a conditional 2025 sixth-round pick that converts to a fourth-round choice if he plays in more than 51 percent of the Steelers’ offensive snaps this season.
Meanwhile, Wilson is looking to rebound from two colossally disappointing seasons with the Denver Broncos, and arrives potentially as the leader in the clubhouse for the Steelers’ starting job despite passing for only 3,070 yards with 26 touchdowns to eight interceptions before being benched for the final two games to avoid injury guarantees in his contract triggering.
Thanks to taking fliers on Wilson and Fields, the Steelers revamped the quarterback room this offseason, but it remains to be seen just how significant either can be over the likes of Kenny Pickett, and Mason Rudolph who struggled to find consistency over the past several seasons.
