The Philadelphia Eagles are in Week 3 of training camp. They had a walkthrough on Wednesday for Day 10 of practice. The Eagles travel to M&T Bank Stadium to face the Baltimore Ravens on Friday at 6:30 P.M. CT for their first preseason game.
Right guard is the only remaining starting position on the offensive line up for grabs. Their draft pick from 2023 entered camp as the early favorite.
The Philadelphia Eagles third-round pick took the early lead
Tyler Steen emerged as the early favorite to replace Cam Jurgens at right guard. Steen, their 65th pick from last year’s draft, throughout spring practice, mandatory minicamp, and the first few days of training camp, received first-team reps on offense and had his locker moved into the starting spot.
However, an injury could prevent him from winning the job.
Tyler Steen suffered an ankle injury
Steen suffered an ankle injury on Saturday, July 27, and missed a week and a half of practice. He returned to practice on Monday, August 5. Since then, he has received playing time with the second-team offense, and it’s unclear whether he will play in their first preseason game.
He is in danger of losing the starting spot, and their free-agent acquisition could overtake him.
The Philadelphia Eagles free-agent signing could take over
Mekhi Becton continues to impress and has risen in the depth chart, recently receiving first-team reps with the first-team offense while Steen missed practice and the two days after he returned to practice. After playing tackle in his first four years with the Jets, Becton has gotten reps at guard during spring practice, minicamp, and training camp. If Steen isn’t available for Friday’s matchup, Becton will get the nod.
If he continues to impress, he has a good shot of winning the starting job.
It’s too early to declare a winner
It’s still early to declare a winner since the Eagles still have weeks left of training camp and haven’t partaken in joint practices or preseason yet. One thing to consider is that Tyler Steen is still the front-runner, as they listed him as the starting right guard, while Mekhi Becton is the backup in their unofficial depth chart. A lot could change over a few weeks.
Will Steen recover from his injury and retake the lead, or will Becton win and thrive in a new position?
