The Philadelphia Eagles came into Sunday Night Football facing a desperate Los Angeles Rams team. Running back Saquon Barkley would put the entire offense on his back during this game, showing why he should be in the MVP conversation and the sure-fire Offensive Player of the Year.
The Rams would do a decent job of keeping Barkley and the Eagles offense in check during the first half, only trailing 13-7 at the half. But the very first play from scrimmage in the second half, Barkley would be fired out of a cannon for a 70-yard touchdown run and never look back. The Philadelphia running back would add another 72-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter helping the Eagles win in prime time 37-20.
Saquon Barkley’s Historic Night
Saquon Barkley would not just have another great night for the Eagles, he would break their franchise record for most rushing yards in a single game. The former second overall pick rushed for 255 yards and two touchdowns, adding 47 receiving yards for good measure.
This would make Barkley the first player in NFL history to ever rush for over 250 yards, have at least 45 receiving yards, and score two touchdowns in the same game. This MVP caliber performance puts the Philadelphia back at 1,392 rushing yards for the season. Putting the superstar running back on pace for 2,151 yards, which would break the all-time record currently belonging to Eric Dickerson.
Only eight running backs have ever topped the 2,000-yard mark in a single season, the most recent being in 2020 when Derrick Henry rushed for 2,027 as a member of the Tennessee Titans. King Henry took to social media to reacted to Barkley’s historic performance only saying, “Go crazy gangsta!!”
Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl Bound?
The Eagles seem to be hitting their stride at exactly the right time. Riding a seven-game winning streak, the Philly defense has only allowed opposing teams to get 20 or more points twice during that stretch. Linebacker Zack Baun has big a big part of that accounting for 104 total tackles, two sacks, one interception, and three forced fumbles. The Vic Fangio led defense has drastically improved since the start of the season and only appear to be getting better.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts has managed to take care of the ball much better down this stretch. Turnovers were an issue during the first few weeks of the season, but around week six this team really began hitting its stride. Hurts has passed for 2,376 yards and 13 touchdowns to five interceptions. Also adding 456 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns on the season.
The Philadelphia Eagles look primed to take on anyone in the NFL and could be a true Super Bowl contender. With Saquon Barkley leading the way, this team is very dynamic and won’t be easy to beat. It could very well come down between the Eagles and the Detroit Lions as to who represents the NFC in this year’s Super Bowl.
