The Philadelphia Eagles are hoping to get back to the Super Bowl this season. For most of the regular season last year, it certainly seemed like they were well on their way to repeating as the NFC Champions. They started the year 10-1 and many expected them to steamroll through the rest of season.
That, of course, did not happen. The Eagles went 1-5 in their last six games and then lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the NFL Playoffs.
As they prepare for the 2024 NFL season, Philadelphia is looking to remedy to its failures of 2023. One of the areas they looked to improve upon was in their wide receiver room. Earlier this offseason, they signed DeVante Parker to be their slot wide receiver. However, he surprised everyone by retiring soon after.
Now the Eagles find themselves in a questionable position with their wide receiver depth again.
The Philadelphia Eagles Are Encouraged to Sign Free Agent Wide Receiver Hunter Renfrow
In an article in which they listed each NFL team’s biggest five weakness, Bleacher Report‘s scouting department listed a third wide receiver (behind AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith) as Philadelphia’s third most glaring flaw.
To remedy this, they suggest that the Eagles sign free agent wide receiver Hunter Renfrow:
“The Eagles have been searching for a third wide receiver to complement A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith for about a year, hence why they signed Julio Jones last fall.
“However, Jones was well past his prime and DeVante Parker unexpectedly retired after signing with the club this offseason, leaving the team with Parris Campbell as its best option at WR3.
“Meanwhile, Renfrow is looking for an opportunity to bounce back after a down year with the Las Vegas Raiders, and coming off the bench as the slot receiver in Philadelphia could be a great opportunity for him.
“The 2021 Pro Bowler could operate in the short to intermediate areas of the field while Brown and Smith threaten defenses deep.”
Last season, Renfrow had 25 receptions for 255 yards and no touchdowns for the Las Vegas Raiders. On the bright side, he appeared in all 17 games after missing seven games due to injury in 2022.
Renfrow was a Pro Bowl wide receiver in 2021 when he caught 103 passes for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns.
Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback Jalen Hurts Could Help Hunter Renfrow
When one looks at Renfrow’s numbers over the last two seasons, one is not very impressed. 61 receptions for 585 yards and two touchdowns in two years is not going to turn any heads.
However, it is important to keep in mind that Renfrow was playing with very poor quarterback play in Las Vegas last season. While he will not get a huge number of targets because of Brown and Smith, playing with a competent quarterback like Jalen Hurts can help him resurrect his career.
Hurts would receive the benefit of another target that can force defenses to be more honest in their coverage. Entering his age 29 season, Renfrow may still have more in the tank.
He just needs the right situation (and the right quarterback).
