What are the Philadelphia Eagles thankful for this Thanksgiving week? Jerry Jones. Okay, Jerry is a who not a what. But regardless, if you ask the Eagles and their fans who or what tops their list of things they are grateful for, Jerry is certainly near the top. Why? The answer is found in a recent interview Jones did with 105.3 The Fan.
Jerry Jones Discusses Extending Mike McCarthy’s Contract
During Jones’ interview with The Fan, he was asked about coach Mike McCarthy. His response has fans in an uproar:
“I don’t think that’s crazy at all. This is a Super Bowl-winning coach. Mike McCarthy has been there and done that. He has great ideas. We got a lot of football left.”
Just Jerry being Jerry. The Cowboys owner and GM has always shown an affinity for sticking with a coach for a bit too long and for living in the past. For example, Jones and Cowboys fans alike are still living off of the Super Bowls they won in the 90’s despite the fact they haven’t even sniffed the conference championship game in Jalen Hurts’ lifetime.
Jones calling Mike McCarthy a “Super Bowl-winning coach” is true, sure, but he also had Aaron Rodgers in his prime and a stacked Packers team. That’s not the Cowboys right now. Certain coaches are good for certain phases for a team. Just look at Eagles’ legend Doug Pederson and Eagles’ nemesis Bill Belichick. Both won Super Bowls but failed miserably the last season or two of their tenures with their respective teams.
What It Means For the Philadelphia Eagles
While McCarthy has kept the Cowboys competitive in the regular season, his history of postseason success matches up well with the Cowboys’ own history, which is that they can’t win a playoff game. Okay, okay, they’ve won one or two in the last couple decades. So if the Eagles can play the Cowboys well in the regular season, they shouldn’t have too much to worry about.

The Cowboys continually get stuck in the “good, but not great” zone, which is the worst place any NFL team can be because denial always keeps such teams from taking the necessary steps to greatness. But with Jones, he tends to hold on just a bit longer than other GMs/owners. Like with Jason Garrett. Weren’t those fun years, Eagles fans?
