The Philadelphia Eagles have a vital 2024 season coming up. After winning the NFC Championship during the 2022 season, Philadelphia was upset in the wild card round of the playoffs last season.
Because of this, the Eagles have made changes to their coaching staff. One of those changes was hiring veteran defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Reports reveal he is already influencing the way the Eagles operate. One recent decision could make him unpopular with players on another team.
Vic Fangio Recommended Longer Practices for Philadelphia Eagles
As previously reported by Matt Lombardo of Gridiron Heroics, the Philadelphia Eagles will have longer practices this training camp compared to previous seasons. This was confirmed by Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni.
In previous seasons under this regime, Philadelphia has only spent an average of 60-90 minutes of high-tempo padded practices. Now, Fangio and Sirianni are looking to bump that up closer to the maximum allowed time under the collective bargaining agreement. That time is 2.5 hours.
Unpopular Defensive Coordinator?
Before this season, Vic Fangio was the defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins. However, he was relieved of his duties at the end of last season. Since then, defensive players such as Jevon Holland from the Dolphins have come out and said that Fangio was difficult to work with compared to their new defensive coordinator.
With such a drastic change in practice procedure led by Fangio here, one could argue he is setting himself up to be unpopular with another set of defensive players. This is especially the case when the old system used to work for the Eagles.
Two years ago, the Eagles averaged just over an hour for padded practices. Philadelphia went on to win the NFC Championship that season. This could lead to players questioning the need for longer practices.
Philadelphia Eagles Moving Forward
The Eagles are hoping to be closer to the 2022 team than the 2023 team. However, one thing they will have to do is improve their pass defense. That is because Philadelphia ranked 31st in the NFL in passing yards allowed per game (252.7).
For reference, the Miami Dolphins did much better in this category. They ranked 15th in the NFL in passing yards per game last season (221.2). Now, the Eagles are hoping Vic Fangio can help bring the team closer to where the Dolphins were last year in this category. We will get a first look at them in Brazil on September 6th against the Green Bay Packers.
