PFF names their top player for 2022

The 2022 season saw an incredible finish to the season. Most of the playoffs were dismally boring, with blowouts occurring through most of the rounds. The Super Bowl was exciting, featuring two teams with players that made big breakthroughs during the season. Pro Football Focus recently named the top player from the 2022 season, including a player from the Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl was a battle between upcoming quarterback superstar Jalen Hurts and two-time NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes would take home the Super Bowl, and the game’s MVP award as the Kansas City Chiefs narrowly defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35. Had the Eagles triumphed at the end, Hurts would have won the Super Bowl MVP.

It was a fitting end to the season. Mahomes won the 2022 NFL MVP. Hurts finished second. PFF listed Mahomes as their top player for last season:

“Mahomes’ season was a legacy-building year. The debate is no longer about whether he is the best quarterback in the game, but simply about how long he needs to play at this level before he is unquestionably the greatest the game has ever seen. What he was able to do in the playoffs on a high ankle sprain will become the stuff of legend in years to come.”

Mahomes and the Chiefs were incredible

What Mahomes did during the playoffs was remarkable. After losing his top wide receiver, Tyreek Hill, last offseason, Mahomes battled through two and a half playoff games with a high-ankle sprain to win the Super Bowl. He was perfect in the second half of that game when the team needed him to be. The Chiefs trailed by double digits at halftime and scored on every possession in the second half. That’s what a top player does.

Hurts was arguably the best for the Eagles in the Super Bowl. But for the season, PFF ranked him 24th overall. Lane Johnson was credited as the Eagles’ top player in 2022. Mahomes was PFF’s highest-ranked Chief, but the team took three out of their top four on the list. Besides Joe Burrow at three, Chris Jones and Travis Kelce were right behind Mahomes.
