The Penn State Nittany Lions made it to the college football playoffs last season and they lost in the semifinals against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Penn State will have high expectations entering this season once again under head coach James Franklin.
One quarterback who was successful in the past under Franklin was Trace McSorley. McSorley played from 2016-2018 and helped Penn State win a BIG10 title. When he was playing, Saquon Barkley was the starting running back on that football team.
Penn State Nittany Lions Bring Back Trace McSorley As Assistant Quarterbacks Coach
The Nittany Lions will be bringing back a familiar face to the team on the coaching staff for the 2025 season and beyond. Trace McSorley is returning to the team as an assistant quarterbacks coach. Danny O’Brien is the current quarterbacks coach.
The Nittany Lions quarterback for the 2025 season will be Drew Allar. McSorley and O’Brien will look to help Allar reach another level in the 2025 college football season. Drew Allar could be one of the top quarterbacks taken in the 2026 NFL Draft.

There are a lot of Nittany Lions fans who are excited about this move for the 2025 college football season. Some may even joke if Drew Allar doesn’t perform well that Trace McSorley needs to play. McSorley played in the NFL for a few years and was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2019 NFL Draft.
However, the former Ravens quarterback will look to help Allar reach new heights next season. Penn State fans can get frustrated with head coach James Franklin, but this is one of the few times they are happy with him also.
