After a couple of years as a starter, it’s fair to say Drew Allar has underperformed as a Nittany Lion. He hasn’t necessarily been bad, but he hasn’t quite lived up to his five-star rating coming out of high school. But in a weak quarterback class in the upcoming draft, scouts are looking Allar’s way,
The Penn State Nittany Lions reached the College Football Playoff Semifinals after a win against Boise State. It isn’t because of Allar, but he’s playing well enough to win. And considering he’s just 20 years old, many scouts think Allar is a prime developmental prospect at the next level.
Drew Allar’s Resume
In his last three games, Allar has thrown for 524 yards and six touchdowns with just two interceptions. Those numbers don’t necessarily pop off the page, but they are a bit below average for his career. In his two years as a starter, he has thrown for a combined 5,823 yards, 49 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He also rushed for an additional 495 yards and ten touchdowns.
So, for a player who has been considered to be “underwhelming,” Allar has found a lot of success in his young career. The biggest knock on Allar, and really Penn State as a whole, is the inconsistent play in big games. The Nittany Lions rarely get blown out by top opponents, but they rarely beat them, either.
In the regular season, Penn State faced two ranked opponents in Ohio State and Illinois. Allar had pedestrian numbers in those two games. Against the Buckeyes Allar finished 12/20 for 146 yards and an interception and against the Fighting Illini he finished 15/21 for 135 yards, So Drew Allar’s recent success against good teams is a relatively new thing. But will his recent play result in Allar being drafted in 2025?
Staying or Leaving
On December 16th Allar announced he would return to Penn State for his senior season. As of now, there’s no indication that anything is going to change, at least from Allar. But his recent play suggests that he should reconsider his decision.
According to UStadium, Allar’s stock is soaring saying,
“Spoke with a front office source regarding Penn State QB Drew Allar and he said Allar is a guy that the league thinks much more high of than fans and the media do. Scouts rave about his size, arm, and ability to manipulate the pocket.”
Despite Allar’s announcement of his intent to return, we won’t hear anything more about it until Penn State’s season ends. But it seems like James Franklin and the Nittany Lions are fully expecting their young star to return, as their backup Beau Pribula signed with the Missouri Tigers in December. But with the amount of QB-needy teams in the NFL, Allar will have a decision to make, as there is growing belief his name could be called first.
Penn State takes on Notre Dame on January 9 for a chance to play in the National Championship. Notre Dame has one of college football’s top defenses, if Allar can continue to play well he could top a lot of boards.
