With offensive position battles already covered, these are the Patriots training camp defensive battles to watch for.

    Outside Linebacker

    Josh Uche at Minicamp.

Veteran and Pro Bowler Matthew Judon is going to start as the right side outside linebacker. This battle is for the left side rusher.

Third year player out of Michigan, Uche, has the most experience coming into camp. He’s played sparingly the past two seasons, but it’s more than the other two options.

Third year player out of Alabama, Anfernee Jennings, played inconsistently his first season and none last year due to injury. While, second year player from Oklahoma, Ronnie Perkins, didn’t play at all. He was inactive for 13 games before he went on the Injury Reserve list.

    Middle Linebacker

Cameron McGrone (Left) and Raekwon McMillan (Right) going through drills.

One of two starting middle linebackers roles is filled by veteran Ja’Whaun Bentley, the other starting one is up for grabs, although Mack Wilson by default is favored.

Both veteran Raekwon McMillian and second year player out of Michigan, Cameron McGrone, missed last year due to injury. While Jahlani Tavai is a run support type linebacker, which is not the best for an every down player.

But the other competitors won’t go down without a fight, even with their problems last year, all they want is an opportunity.

    Cornerback

Malcolm Butler (Left) and Adrian Phillips (Right) in the middle of a defensive back drill.

With the nickel corner position already filled by seventh year player Jonathan Jones, the two outside corner position has many possible suitors.

The favorites are the veterans Jalen Mills, Terrance Mitchell and returning Patriot Malcolm Butler. They all have lots of experience and have started before, whether in New England or elsewhere.

Rookies Marcus and Jack Jones (Not related) have talent as mid-round draft picks, but are still finding their place on the team and in the league. While, fourth year player Joejuan Williams wants to increase his role and prove he was worth the second round pick the Patriots made in 2019.
