The New England Patriots are going into attempt number two to find their franchise quarterback after legendary Tom Brady moved on to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and eventually retirement.
New England took quarterback Drake Maye with the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and fully intend on him being the next long-term quarterback for the Patriots, however, it will be a while until fans get to see him play.
New England Patriots Fans Shocked By Quarterback News
On Thursday, the Patriots announced that Jacoby Brissett will start the team’s Week 1 game against the Bengals. During a team meeting, Jerod Mayo told his players that the No. 3 overall pick in 2024 would be the backup to Brissett.
The veteran Brissett and the highly touted rookie Maye had been battling for the starting job during training camp, however head coach Jerod Mayo has been hesitant to announce a starter. Despite making his decision, Mayo said he would not reveal the starter until the team was informed.
According to Ryan Glasspiegel of the New York Post:
In a spot on WEEI earlier this week, Mayo said Maye had been performing better than Brissett as of late.
“What I will say is this is a true competition … and I would say at this current point, Drake has outplayed Jacoby,” Mayo said. “Now, in saying that, we have to take in the full body of work, going all the way back to the spring and beginning of training camp, and we’ll see where we end up. But those are the conversations that will happen here over the next couple of days.”
For now, the Patriots are going to give Maye some additional time to adjust to the NFL before, in theory, turning the franchise over to him.
Brissett began his career in New England in 2016, getting two starts when Tom Brady was suspended for Deflategate.
He has played for the Colts, Dolphins, Browns and Commanders in the seasons since.
