The New England Patriots dismantled the Detroit Lions yesterday 29-0 in a game that never felt close, even from the start. After forcing a punt on the first series, the Patriots would march down the field in six plays for a Nick Folk field goal. This was one of five field goals for Folk on the day. On the following series Jack Jones would have another interception, making it a back to back games with a pick. The Patriots would then have a fumble six when Kyle Dugger returned it 59 yards after a Matthew Judon sack.
Defense Led The Way To Victory
The rest of the game would be a continuation of the Lions either punting or turning the ball over on downs followed by points scored by New England. The Patriots were also able to hold Detroit to 0-4 on fourth down. The game never felt in doubt for New England. Judon led the way for the Patriots with two sacks and now is the NFL leader with six. The defense was one of the main focal points yesterday as they shut out the highest scoring team in football. As the Patriots continue their staunch defense these past few weeks, the emergence of Rhamondre Stevenson is another focal point from yesterday’s victory.
Stevenson’s Breakout Performance
After Damien Harris went down with a hamstring, Stevenson carried the workload for the Patriots offense. Stevenson carried the ball 25 times for 161 yards. The play that started all the momentum for him was on the Patriots second drive when he stumbled his way through the Lions defense to break off a 49 yard gain. He also had two receptions for 14 yards. Stevenson, who has seen more action in recent weeks, could have even more carries now with Harris’ availability in the air for next week.
Zappe Shines In First Start
Lastly, Bailey Zappe was perfect for the Patriots yesterday. With a simplified offense yesterday, He look just as comfortable as he did last week in Green Bay. Zappe did throw one pick but other than that he was great. Zappe did what he has done best in his limited time as the Patriots quarterback, which is keep it simple. With a game plan that was run heavy and when he had to pass he was confident with where he was going Zappe showed growth that comes with confidence from playing.
Matt Patricia was excellent as a play caller again making sure he set his quarterback up for success. Zappe didn’t check out of any plays, probably because they told him not to, but each play seemed to be perfect. Zappe also avoided pressure many times and made throws on the run showing off a little of his athleticism.
Jakobi Meyers Return
Lastly, Jakobi Meyers return was just what the Patriots needed. Meyers had 111 yards and a touchdown on seven catches. Meyers, who has missed the last two games with a knee injury, showed no rust as he was able to pick up right where he left off. The best thing for Zappe right now is to have as many veteran receivers at his disposal. Meyers who has been a security blanket for Mac Jones was no different for Bailey Zappe.
The Patriots will travel to Cleveland next week to face the 2-3 Browns.
